The Career Center At Newtown High School Lists Scholarships
The NHS Career Center has information about all scholarships of which it is notified. Details about some of the currently available scholarships are offered here, but students and parents should visit the Career Center for full requirement details and applications.
Among the scholarships available are the following:
Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship â A $10,000 scholarship award from Northrop Grumman will be awarded to a graduating senior from a Fairfield County or New Haven County high school who will be entering an accredited college to pursue a degree in engineering. The funds are to be used for tuition, books and/or room and board at the institution of higher learning chosen by the applicant. The minimum composite SAT score is 1700 and GPA of 3.5 for grades 9-12. Applications are available in the Career Center or may be downloaded from www.es.northropgrumman.com/engscholars. Applications are due before April 30.
Ashlar of Newtown Junior Volunteer Scholarship Award â Ashlar of Newtown will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who will attend college or a continuing education program after high school. Applicants must have a total of 50 volunteer hours at Ashlar over the past year or the course of two summers. The award will be presented to the winner at the Volunteer Recognition Event in April. Interested students must contact Susan Judge in the Therapeutic Recreation Department for an application. The deadline is March 31.
Middle Gate PTA Scholarship â The Middle Gate School PTA will award one $1,500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who attended Middle Gate School. Applicants must complete the two-page application form and include two letters of reference along with an acceptance letter to a post-high school program. Applications are available at the Career Center. They must be received at Middle Gate School by April 23.
Disabled Workersâ Scholarship â This four-year annual scholarship assists students who are children of workers from Connecticut who have been totally disabled from an injury occurring in the workplace. The total award is $10,000 ($1,250 per semester for four years). All applicants should demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. The Career Center has applications. The deadline is March 15.
 Mary Benevento/CTAHPERD Scholarship â Two $1,000 scholarships are available for graduating high school students who will attend a Connecticut collegiate institution to pursue a certified program of study leading to a bachelorâs degree in health education, physical education, recreation, or dance. Applications will be judged by scholarship, competence, career potential, and general worthiness. Applications are available from www.ctahperd.org or the Career Center. The application deadline is April 1.
Glenn Moon Scholarships â The Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut will award one $2,000 renewable scholarship and three one-time $1,500 grants to graduating high school seniors. All 2007 graduates of Connecticut high schools, public or private, are eligible, provided there is a serious intention to pursue a career in teaching in public or private schools, hopefully in Connecticut. Each applicant will be evaluated according to scholarship record, financial need, character and personality, and interests and educational activities. The Career Center has applications. All applications must be submitted by March 31.
Hannah Griswold Grant â The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will award one $750 scholarship to a minority graduating high school senior from Connecticut who is planning to major in education. All applicants must demonstrate the qualities consistent with the promise of leadership in education, including scholarship and community service. All applicants must submit three references, an essay under 500 words, transcript of work through January of the senior year of high school, and a completed application form. The Career Center has applications and the deadline is March 18.
Elizabeth Sonier Grant â The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will award one grant of $750 to a graduating senior planning to major in music education. Applicants must be residents of Connecticut and demonstrate the qualities consistent with the promise of leadership in education, including scholarship and community service. All applicants must submit three references, an essay under 500 words, transcript of work, and a completed application form. The Career Center has applications and the deadline is March 18.
Juvenile Arthritis College Scholarships â The Arthritis Foundation is offering three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors or college undergraduates with juvenile arthritis or another rheumatic disease. Students must be residents of Connecticut. Applications are available by mail, email or fax from the foundation at 800-541-8350. All applications are due by April 13.
Connecticut Building Congress Scholarships â Graduating high school students from Connecticut entering college-level programs in architecture, engineering, construction management, surveying, drafting, planning or other courses of study leading to an associate, BA or masterâs degree in the construction field are eligible for CBC scholarships. The awards will be given for academic merit, extracurricular activities, potential, and financial need. The scholarships may be renewable each year based on performance in school and available resources. The number of awards as well as the amounts may vary at the discretion of the Board of Directors. All applications must be received by March 1.
Bill Lauf Memorial Scholarship â The Danbury Fish and Game Club will award one $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior from the greater Danbury area who plans on a career in journalism or the environment. The award will be made directly to the recipientâs college to help with tuition. The committee will make the award to the student who best exemplifies the qualities possessed by the late sportsman and journalist, Bill Lauf. These qualities include, but are not limited to, sportsmanship, integrity, humor, curiosity, love of fellow man, and love of writing. Applications must be received by April 1 and are available in the Career Center.
Hawley School PTA Scholarship â The Hawley School PTA will award two scholarships to graduating seniors from Newtown High School who attended Hawley School. In prior years, the amounts have been $1,000 and $500. All applicants must rank in the top 50 percent of the graduating class and be accepted to a post-high school academic program. Applicants should demonstrate the elements of character, achievement, and dedication representative of the highest goals of education at Hawley School. An interview with the PTA Scholarship committee is required. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due by April 12.
Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation â The Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation was established in 1968 as a counterpart of the well-known publication, Whoâs Who Among American High School Students, which recognizes exemplary students from across the nation. The foundation also provides more than $100,000 in scholarships annually. To qualify for a scholarship a student must be a legal resident of the United States and demonstrate academic ability. There is a $4 processing fee. Interested students should visit www.ecisf.org or the Career Center for additional information. All applications are due by May 15.
Dunkinâ Donuts Scholarship Program â This program will award 100 separate $1,000 scholarships to âwell-roundedâ high school seniors from Connecticut: those who excel academically, demonstrate leadership qualities, and have been involved in activities within their schools and communities. The application process is entirely online at www.dunkindonuts.com/scholarship. The deadline for submitting an application is March 31.
