Newtown Historical Society

To Host September Antiques Show

Newtown Historical Society will present its Annual Autumn Antiques Show on Sunday, September 24, from 10 am to 4 pm. The event will be in the gymnasium of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street (Route 25), and Nancy Taylor is again serving as the show manager.

“With the popularity of our Annual March Shows over the past 21 years the historical society decided several years ago to give our dealers and our customers another opportunity to view and purchase collections of antiques and collectibles,” said Mrs Taylor. “Collectors will find quality items spanning all areas of interests and eras.

“We are very proud of the diversity of dealers we attract to our shows and the quality of antiques coupled with the affordable prices,” she added.

Among the dealers at the fall show will be Caroline Dirsa of Orange, who will be bringing a red blanket chest, an array of brass candlesticks, yellowware, and primitive wood items. Returning all the way from Maine will be Eric Stang and Jeffrey Searles of Indian Pipe Antiques, with their specialty: 18th and 19th Century furniture and decorative accessories.

Steve and Ginny Balser of Old Horizon Antiques will also return, with quality primitives and early furniture.  Antiques To You – with Denise Broderick and Joe Liszka – will be attending from Massachusetts, featuring lightning rods, Royal Doulton figurines, Roseville and other pottery, and wrought iron pieces.

Beverly Dutton Antiques always has an attractive display of Victorian era items, and the Pirozzolis of Sport Hill Antiques of Redding will be returning to the show.

They may not be mentioned here, “but be sure many of your favorites are returning,” said Mrs Taylor.

Alongside the returning favorites the autumn show will also introduce new vendors.

Venetian Designs of Southport will be bringing a selection of antique rugs and tapestries, and Cindy Glaberson of Encore will be offering vintage and antique textiles and linens.

Anne Hall and Mark Brady from Sturbridge, Mass., will offer a quality booth of antique prints.

“[These dealers] were brought to my attention by one of the historical society’s trustees, himself an avid and respected collector,” Mrs Taylor said. “We promise returning favorites and new dealers. We work hard at creating a different show each season so there will always be something new for our collectors.”

Admission to the show is $5, with the proceeds of the fundraiser benefiting the historical society’s free public programs as well as the preservation of the Matthew Curtiss House Museum and its collections. The circa 1750 Curtiss House, across the street at 44 Main Street, will also be open on September 24.

Costumed docents will welcome visitors between 11 am and 4 pm, during which time there will also be ongoing demonstrations by Jenny O’Brien on the art of making folk art dolls.
