Available Scholarships

The Career Center at Newtown High School presents the following list of national scholarships currently available for college-bound students. Please note that some scholarships may request money to be sent with the scholarship application.

The Career Center automatically advertises all scholarships received in the mail. To verify the legitimacy of the scholarship, the Career Center strongly suggests that potential applicants contact the FTC Consumer Response Center at 877-382-4357, www.ftc.gov., the National Fraud Information Center at 800-876-7060, www.fraud.org, or the Better Business Bureau at 703-276-0100, www.bbb.org.

Newtown Youth Services Youth Advisory Board Scholarship — The organization is offering a scholarship to a graduating senior from Newtown who has given back something to the community through volunteer work and community service. The Advisory Board will determine the amount. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be returned to Newtown Youth Services by May 15 by 5 pm.

TKE Triangle Achievement Awards — UConn’s Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter will award three scholarships of $300 to male high school seniors who plan to attend UConn Storrs in the fall of 2007. The candidates will be evaluated on academic success, extracurricular involvement, and leadership. The chapter will hold its Triangle Achievement Banquet in early September for the finalists. Any applicant or winner will incur no obligation to join the organization. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be postmarked by June 29.

Kay Wyrick Scholarship — The Foster Adoptive Mission will award one $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior from the Greater Waterbury, Torrington or Danbury areas in memory of Kay Wyrick, outstanding volunteer and child advocate. Students should have been in foster care for one consecutive year at some point in their lives. Applicants should have a GPA of B and be a person of color, preferably African American or of African ancestry. Students should plan to major in a field related to working with children in the community and be accepted to an accredited postsecondary program of study. Applications are available in the Career Center. The application deadline is June 1.
