High School Marijuana
Police said they arrested a boy under age 16, charging him with possession of marijuana after he was found to have a small bag of marijuana in the Newtown High School cafeteria midday on March 9. Police did not disclose the youthâs identity due to his age. The boy was released into the custody of his parents for a March 22 appearance in Danbury Juvenile Court.
Shoplifting
Police report that Big Y supermarket security staffers contacted them after they spotted a person allegedly shoplifting at the store at Newtown Shopping Village on Queen Street midday on March 9.
Police said they investigated and charged Lizbeth Moroney, 39, of 4 Cherry Street with sixth degree larceny. Police said they additionally charged Moroney with risk of injury to a minor because she was accompanied by her daughter who is under age 16. Police released Moroney on $250 bail for a March 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
DUI Charge
At about 7:45 pm on March 7, police received a call from a Big Y supermarket employee stating that a female customer in the store, who had appeared to be intoxicated, drove away from the premises.
Police said they responded and located the woman motorist at 22 Church Hill Road and investigated, charging Julie France-Pierpaoli, 37, of Southbury with driving under the influence and with driving under suspension.
After processing the case, police released France-Pierpaoli on $100 bail for a March 23 court appearance.
Traffic Signal
Police report a two-vehicle accident involving two sport-utility vehicles at the intersection of Church Hill Road and the Exit 10 off-ramp of Interstate 84 at about 1 pm, March 9.
After a traffic signal turned green, motorist Amy Rooney, 26, of 6 West Farm Ridge Road, who was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, proceeded from an off-ramp onto Church Hill Road, police said. Motorist Nicole Favreau, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Blazer westbound on Church Hill Road, then braked for a red traffic signal, but could not stop in time and collided with the Nissan, police said.
Newtown ambulance volunteers transported Rooney to Danbury Hospital to be checked, police said. Police issued Favreau an infraction ticket for failure to obey a traffic control signal.
Castle Hill Crash
Motorist Catherine Gormley, 54, of 11 Wendover Road, who was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Passat westward on Castle Hill Road at about 9:10 am, March 9, lost control of the auto while negotiating a left curve and went off the right side of the road, striking a tree, police said.
There were no injuries. Police issued Gormley a written warning for making a restricted turn.
