Gem Opens At The Gallery At Buck House March 7 w/1 cut
ak/gs set 2-20 #689140
NEW YORK CITY â âGem,â an exhibition that juxtaposes jewelry with fine and decorative arts, will open at The Gallery at Buck House, 1326 Madison Avenue, at 94th Street, on March 7. To show the relationship between all three disciplines, gallery owner Deborah Buck has collaborated with art expert Charlie Scheips, who curated this show featuring treasures from the archives of Illustration House, a center for the history of the art of illustration.
âHaving just added estate jewelry to my mix of art and antiques, I thought it was appropriate to organize a show that presents the common denominator of jewelry as an underlying motif,â said Buck who also owns Buck House, an antique shop at 1264 Madison Avenue.
According to Buck, âThe art of illustration has never been showcased at Buck house and this felt like a pairing of topic and venue that would convey the fun and fairy tale magic of jewelry.â
Scheips selected the artwork to represent many of the greatest illustrators of the Twentieth Century including Francis S. Leyendecker, Eduardo Benito, Rene Bouche, Romain de Tirtoff (Erte) and Carl Erickson (Eric) as well as many other illustrators who were once considered the best in the field.
âThis exhibition features drawings and paintings in a variety of media from small gouaches and watercolors to paintings on oil and canvas,â said Scheips. âIt spans almost 70 years of art â from an early cover painting for a 1913 Vogue magazine cover â to masterpieces from the 1920s through 1950s, as well as later examples from the 1960s and 1970s.â
All items on display are for sale with prices ranging from $200 to $100,000.
The entrance to The Gallery at Buck House is on 94th Street, by appointment only. For information and appointments, www.BuckHouse.biz or 212-828-3123.

Mayumi Terada Photographs Open At Robert Miller Gallery In NYC
avv/gs set 2-20 #689172
NEW YORK CITY â Robert Miller Gallery announces the first New York solo exhibition of the photographic works of Mayumi Terada on view March 1âApril 7, a reception for the artist will be Thursday, March 1, 6 to 8 pm.
The photographs in this exhibition are black and white prints, ranging in size from 40½ by 55 inches to 24 by 20 inches and have been completed since the artistâs arrival in New York in 2001.
Teradaâs sparsely appointed subjects are light-infused interior spaces. They are stripped down settings with windows or doors and simple domestic furnishings that evoke a sense of absence. Yet these images are not what they seem. Subtle inconsistencies of scale disrupt the reading of the scene.
In reality the artist has constructed her own subjects. They are miniature tabletop tableaux made by her own hand. These all-white models are illuminated by natural light and then photographed. The results are images rendered in an exquisitely refined tonality.
The gallery is at 524 West 26th Street. For information, 212-366-4774.
