The Destruction Of The Canadian Boreal Forest

BROOKFIELD — The Boreal Forest, in the Alberta province of Canada north of Edmonton, is one of the largest intact forest systems left on Earth. At roughly the size of 13 Californias, the area’s significance transcends its boundaries.

The Boreal Forest acts as the largest terrestrial freshwater system on Earth, a vital buffer for global warming, and a temporary home to between three and five billion migratory birds.

Unfortunately the area is being destroyed at an alarming rate, primarily to make disposable paper products like catalogs.

On Monday, March 20, the Housatonic Valley group of The Sierra Club will host “Destruction of The Canadian Boreal Forest.” Joshua Buswell-Charkow, from Forest Ethics, will offer a slide lecture.

The program is open to the public, free of charge. It will be at Brookfield Community Center, 100 Pocono Road.

Call Marcia Wilkins, at 775-9644, for additional information.
