Wind Is A No-Show At The
16th Annual Kite Flying Contest
By Tanjua Damon
The Newtown Parks and Recreation 16th Annual Kite Flying contest attracted about 25 kit flyers, but the most important ingredient â wind ââ was lacking Sunday.
But that did not stop kite fliers from being creative and willing to run the lengths of Ram Pasture to have their kites flying in the air by the time judges arrived to see what this yearâs contestants brought forth.
Amy Mangold and her son Shaun spent a good hour trying to figure out who should be selected for the eight categories â Highest Flying, Most Colorful, Best Kite Flyer, Smallest Kite, Best Homemade Kite, Most Unusual, Largest Kite, and Longest Tail. Both the judges felt it was stiff competition this year.
The Winners for the 16th Annual Kite Flying Contest are:
Highest Flying â Makenna and Logan Jordan.
Most Colorful â Riley Page; runner-up, Kate Luongo.
Best Kite Flyer â Lane Kummer; runner-up; Mason Page.
Smallest Kite â Heidi Poarch; runner-up, Maggie Luongo.
Best Homemade Kite â Susann and Kristina Assner.
Most Unusual â Henry Summ.
Largest Kite â Sarah Poarch.
Longest Tail â Mark Ashbolt; runner-up Paige Thanasoulis.
The Kite Flying contest usually is held the first Sunday in May. For more information contact Parks and Rec at 270-4340.
