New Time And Place For Library Book Sale
New Time And Place
For Library Book Sale
By Nancy K. Crevier
Everybody loves a surprise and the Friends of the C.H. Booth Library announced this week a big surprise for the people of Newtown and surrounding communities.
The 31st Annual Book Sale will be held this year at Reed Intermediate School, 3 Trades Lane, Saturday, July 1, to Wednesday, July 5. Hours will be 9 am to 5 pm each day.
The shift from the Labor Day weekend was precipitated by transitions at Fairfield Hills that could no longer accommodate the book sale.
Holding the book sale in July will provide patrons with a better environment and the perfect opportunity to buy books for summer reading. Earlier donations to the library of gently used books is encouraged, making spring cleaning time the ideal time to gather together tomes gathering dust and bring them down to the Booth Library.
The move to Reed Intermediate School will mean added comfort and safety for patrons. In the comfort of a spacious, air-conditioned building with indoor plumbing and plenty of free parking, book lovers will continue to find the variety of books, CDs, tapes, and music for which the sale has become famous.
âIn order to responsibly continue the sale, we had to find a new home advantageous to our patrons,â said Friends president Denise Kaiser. âIn order to do so, we had to break with the tradition of holding the sale over the Labor Day weekend.â
In working with RIS principal Donna Denniston and buildings and grounds supervisor Dominic Posca, it was determined that the availability of the school property during July 4th weekend would be the best solution.
âMrs Denniston and Mr Posca have been tremendously supportive to allow us to continue our tradition [of holding a book sale],â said Ms Kaiser. The Friends of the Library will be using the facility in keeping with the Board of Education guidelines, she said, and are dedicated to continuing to hold what has been called âone of the finest book sales in the Northeast.â
âWe are hoping that with the change in date that it will open up new volunteer possibilities,â Ms Kaiser said. In previous years, evening hours were limited for volunteers, but with the new location will allow for extended set up hours. To volunteer, call the library at 426-5433 or send email to BoothBookSale@yahoo.com.
