Mavericks Basketball Team Goes National
The Connecticut Mavericks U14 girlsâ AAU Basketball team, consisting of high school players from the area, including Newtown, competed in the National Tournament in Florida this month.
The Mavs finished 3-3 in the tourney. National tourney game results are as follows: Won 56-43 vs Miami Lady Bulls; Lost 63-43 to Visionary Basketball (MA); Lost 68-26 to Minnesota Suns (the eventual National runner-up team); Lost 49-41 to Wisconsin Hoops Select; Won 43-38 vs Manatee PAL (FL); and Won 58-50 vs New Mexico Shock.
The Mavericks participated in several tournaments leading up to the National competition and went 3-1 in the Future Stars Tournament in Rye, NY, 3-2 in the Blue Chip tourney in Fairfield, 3-2 in the State Tournament, 3-1 in the Connecticut Storm Motherâs Day Classic in New London; 4-0 (champions) in the Elite Grassroots Tournament held in Fairfield and New Haven, 3-1 in the Connecticut Premiere Tournament in Fairfield, 4-0 (champs) in the Connecticut Breeze Tournament in Fairfield CT, and 3-1 in the Future Stars Prepare For Nationals Tournament in New Rochelle, NY.
The team is coached by Katy Kleis, Newtown Highâs freshman girlsâ team head coach and varsity team assistant. Newtown team members are Maddy Good, Bridget Power, and Samantha Steimle. The Mavericks posted a 26-8 record before National Tournament competition.
