Truck Accident Closes Hanover Road During Storm
Although much less snow fell on Wednesday than had been predicted, the several inches of snow that did accumulate created very slippery road conditions for the few motorists who ventured out onto local streets, police said.
Local schools were closed for the day, greatly reducing the traffic volume. Because few motorists were traveling in the adverse conditions, there were few accidents. But one accident closed a section of Hanover Road through the afternoon and into the night, police said.
At about 1:40 pm motorist Peter Nowak, 47, of 28 Mile Hill Road South was driving a 2001 Ford pickup truck southward on Hanover Road, south of its intersection with Pond Brook Road, when the truck slid on the snowy road while negotiating a curve in the road, police said.
The pickup truck collided with a utility pole positioned along the right side of the road, knocking it over. The pole fell across Hanover Road, blocking traffic in both directions. Nowak was not injured, police said.
The location of the accident resulted in long detours for motorists traveling through that area. Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the scene. Police remained at the accident scene until about 10 pm, by which time utility crews had erected a new pole to replace the pole destroyed in the accident.
Police said they issued Nowak an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.
