Richard O. Schmid
Former Newtown resident Richard O. Schmid, 72, of Wall, N.J., died on January 12 at Sunnyside Manor in Wall.
He served in the US Army, 161 Logistical Command, Fort Bragg, N.C., designing visual aids in support of war games involving 2,000 allied officers each year. He spent 18 years as senior management consultant with worldwide project responsibilities for Union Carbide Corp of New York and Danbury. During his Carbide service years he traveled extensively while earning professional engineering licenses in the states of California and New Jersey, and was a certified manufacturing engineer for the Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Mr Schmid was a US patent holder and contributed articles for publications in The Journal of Industrial Engineers. He was instrumental in forming the firm known as Management Consulting Services (MCS) of Westport, in 1986 and served as vice president until his retirement.
He was also past president of MTM Association for Stoneards and Research in New Jersey.
He graduated from NJIT, Newark College of Engineering in 1953, earning both bachelorâs and masterâs degrees in mechanical engineering.
He was member of Pi Tau Sigma Fraternity and was past president of the Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He also greatly enjoyed collecting antique cars and was member of the Buick Club of America, as well as the Jersey Shore Chapter. He was a founding father of the Nativity Lutheran Church, East Brunswick, N.J.
Born in Irvington, N.J., he was raised in Union, N.J., and lived in East Brunswick and Newtown, before moving to Wall five years ago.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn (Domain) Schmid in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Schirmer) Schmid; his daughters, Sandra Lynne, Joanne, and Marianne; his son, Michael; six grandchildren, Courtney Lee, Cameron William, Michael Brian, Liana, and Jake. He also leaves his sister, Joan M. Flagg; and his niece, Nancy J. Bergsten.
Funeral service took place at OâBrien Funeral Home followed by committal in Hollywood Memorial Park, Union, N.J.
