Frightening Account Of Nazi Persecution Next On TheatreWorks Boards
NEW MILFORD â TheatreWorksâ season continues with Martin Shermanâs shattering and controversial drama Bent, opening on April 20.
While theatre will often move audiences emotionally, not many plays have an impact on the perceptions of history. Even fewer can do both.
Bent, a harrowing account of the Nazisâ persecution of homosexuals, is one of them.
Following its stage debut in London over 20 years ago, the once-obscure pink trianglesâ that gays wore in the concentration camps have become potent symbols of homophobic oppression â and gay pride â all thanks to this powerful piece of theatre.
Bent chronicles a love story set against the background of 1934 Germanyâs awakening fascist terror and persecution of homosexuals. The play travels from the world of Berlinâs gay nightclub subculture to the bleak horror of Dachau in a harrowing, historical tale of love, hate and redemption.
Bent will be presented Friday and Saturday evenings, April 20 through May 12, at 8 pm. Tickets for all shows are $15 for adults and $13 for students and seniors.
On Thursday April 19, senior citizens are invited to view a free preview presentation at 8 pm; the following Thursday â April 26 â is the theaterâs Pay-What-You-Can night, where audience members name the price for their ticket.
Reservations can be made by calling the box office at 860-350-6863. Reservations are not accepted for any of the special Thursday night performances.
Please note that the Saturday, April 21, performance is a fundraiser to benefit the Interfaith AIDS Ministry.
Tickets for this special evening are $25, with all proceeds going to IAM. For more information about this performance call the ministry directly at 748-4077.
TheatreWorks is at 5 Brookside Avenue in New Milford.
