South Main DUI

Police said they received a telephone call informing them of an erratic driver on South Main Street about 11:45 pm March 23.

Police said they found motorist Eileen J. Bednarz, 36, of Oxford driving erratically on South Main Street, near its intersection with Elm Drive. Police said they stopped the vehicle and gave Bednarz field sobriety tests, which she failed.

Police charged Bednarz with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right. After processing, police released Bednarz for an April 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Equestrian Ridge

Police report that sometime between 12:30 and 8:30 am March 18, someone entered an Equestrian Ridge home in Poverty Hollow and stole a combination television/VCR, a cable television converter box, and a Nokia cellular telephone. The approximate total value of the stolen items is $650.

The person who stole the items entered the home through an unlocked rear door while the home was unoccupied. The incident constitutes second-degree burglary and fourth-degree larceny.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 426-5841.

Huntingtown Crash

Motorist Kim Helfer, 17, of 17 Timber Mill Road was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla southbound on Huntingtown Road, south of its intersection with Orchard Hill Road, about 5:45 pm March 25 when the Toyota came to the crest of a hill and encountered a vehicle traveling northbound, police said.

The Toyota swerved to avoid the northbound vehicle, went out of control, and ran off the left side of the road, striking a stone wall head-on, police said.

Helfer, who was seatbelted, was not injured, police said. Police issued Helfer a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Dodgingtown Collision

Police report motorist Steven E. Santaniello, 17, of 2 Fox Hollow Lane, Sandy Hook, was driving a 1999 Dodge Avenger westbound on Cemetery Road in Dodgingtown about 6:45 pm March 21, when, while negotiating a curve, the auto went out of control, went off the left side of the road and struck wire fencing.

Santaniello was not injured. Police issued him an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Rush Hour MVA

Motorist Gina T. Yanez, 25, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry, pulled out from Edmond Road onto Church Hill Road into the path of a westbound 1995 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Vincent Caggianiello, 29, of Derby, resulting in a collision, about 4:30 pm March 21, police said.

There were no injuries.

Police verbally warned Yanez for failure to grant the right of way. Police issued Caggianiello an infraction ticket on a charge of failing to carry an automotive insurance card.

Interstate Accident

 State police report an accident between a tractor-trailer truck and an auto on Interstate 84 about 10:30 pm March 20.

Motorist Deborah W. Stanton, 45, of Danbury, was driving a 1991 Mazda Protégé westbound on I-84, west of Exit 10, when tractor-trailer truck driver Douglas E. Hott, 54, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., changed lanes, striking the Mazda, state police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Stanton to Danbury Hospital to be treated for minor head injuries, state police said.

Police issued Hott an infraction ticket for making an unsafe lane change.

 

Church Hill DUI

Police report that while on patrol about 9:36 pm March 27, they noticed that motorist Christopher S. D’Angelo, 29, of 99 Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook Center, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Church Hill Road.

The vehicle eventually pulled into the Blue Colony Diner parking lot where it drove into a ditch, police said. Police said D’Angelo failed field sobriety tests.

Police charged him with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right. After processing, police released D’Angelo for an April 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

       Hawleyville Break

Police report that someone sometime between 2 and 3 am March 29 broke into the Hawleyville Deli on Hawleyville Road and stole 138 cartons of cigarettes valued at $4,455, constituting a case of third-degree larceny, which is a felony.

The thief broke a front window of the business, entered the building and stole the goods, police said. Police are investigating.

Queen Street

Motorist Gail M. O’dell, 48, of 49 Schoolhouse Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Ford Taurus station wagon, was stopped in a northbound line of traffic on Queen Street at Glover Avenue about 11 am March 24, when the Ford was struck from behind by a northbound 1997 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Michael A. Russo, 30, of Monroe, police aid.

There were no injuries. Police issued Russo a written warning for failure to carry automotive insurance and operating a motor vehicle at an unsafe distance.

Wasserman Way

Police said motorist Brian McCormack, 41, of Shelton, who was driving a 2001 Jeep Laredo, was stopped in traffic on Wasserman Way about 7 am March 27, when the Jeep was struck from behind by a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by James E. Burnick, 40, of 47 Yogananda Street. There were no injuries, police said.

Juvenile Theft

Police report they charged a juvenile with sixth-degree larceny March 28 after the youth allegedly stole two boxes of merchandise from a display rack at Cave Comics, 57 Church Hill Road. The boxes contained figurines, police said. The juvenile is scheduled to appear April 5 in Danbury Juvenile Court to answer the charge. Because the accused is under age 16, police do not disclose the identity of the person.
