Already Thinking Back-To-School

By Laurie Borst

Since 1997, Newtown Junior Women’s Club (NJWC) has funded a Back-To-School Backpack Program for economically disadvantaged children in Newtown. Last year, Newtown Youth Services (now Newtown Youth and Family Services, NYFS), partnered with NJWC to provide new backpacks and supplies for the start of the school year.

Newtown Social Services provides the number of students and their grade levels to NJWC. Marya Gaiser, chair of the Backpack Committee, orders backpacks and supplies in bulk from a school supply distributor. The cost is $35 for each filled backpack.

Members of Juniors, some of their children, and volunteers from NYFS then fill the backpacks with the supplies. Newtown Social Services delivers the packs to the students. This year, 81 backpacks will be given to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

NJWC is a volunteer civic organization whose projects give back to the community. Among the projects are Discovery Science Workshops, Tag-A-Gift Program, Thanksgiving Baskets, and the Jane Syme Scholarship, as well as the Backpack Program.

NYFS offers counseling services, case and crisis management, and supports groups. The Newtown 5K and Kids’ Fun Run, annual Dinner Dance Auction, and Youth Talent Show are some of the events NYFS sponsors.

Throughout the year, NJWC accepts donations for this project. Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to NJWC, PO Box 217, Botsford CT 06404.
