Airplane Crashes Into Woods Off Route 67
SOUTHBURY â At about 4:07 pm April 20, a small airplane crashed into a wooded area, near the intersection of Route 67 (Roxbury Road) and North Poverty Road, state police said.
A single-engine, propeller-driven, six-seat aircraft piloted by John Thorp of Chargin Falls, Ohio, crashed alongside Route 67, near the Grace Meadows elderly housing complex. The crash ignited brush fires in the area and caused power outages. The airplane had snagged some power cables before hitting the ground nose-down, bringing down those cables.
Southbury ambulance volunteers transported Mr Thorp to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, state police said. Mr Thorp was the airplaneâs sole occupant.
Mr Thorp was flying from Ohio to Rhode Island when the airplane developed engine problems, resulting in the crash.
Southbury firefighters, plus firefighters from other towns, responded to extinguish the scattered brush fires. Connecticut Light & Power Company crews went to the scene to restore power to the area.
A section of Route 67 was closed to through-traffic while the airplane crash wreckage was removed and power was restored.
