McVeigh And The Letter Of The Law

To the Editor:

There has been a lot of uproar recently about the delay of the execution of Timothy McVeigh. I want to precede what I am going to say with that in no way am I a supporter of Timothy McVeigh and what he has done. The uproar has come over the fact that McVeigh’s May 16 execution has been pushed to June 11 due to the FBI withholding documents from the lawyers of Timothy McVeigh from their investigation. Because of this, McVeigh can not only have a longer delay but if McVeigh wanted he could appeal for a new trial. Since he has been convicted of the biggest terrorist attack on the United States, people of course are in utter outrage. I say don’t be.

We set up our American legal system in all its glory this way. This system has been made by the people. If you’re mad at anyone get mad at the United States of America.

When one of the parties in a case of criminal law has evidence that they intend to use in a case they must make it available to the other side, if they do not then we see what is happening with the McVeigh case. This is how our system works, if people don’t like how the system is set up they shouldn’t have come up with the laws that we did to ensure that any individual has their fair trial no matter the severity of the crime that the person is being accused of. I say that if we don’t allow him the right to have something changed in his case then no one deserves that right. Let the letter of the law be for everyone or no one.

Sincerely,

Pete Paduano
