Celebrating Earth Day
(with photos)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
For the past ten years, a very generous benefactor, who would prefer to remain
anonymous, has donated spruce and dogwood seedlings to school children
throughout the district to celebrate Earth Day.
These seedlings have meant a lot to the children.
Kate Sielding, fifth grader at Sandy Hook School, gave her tree loving care,
and it grew well. Her mother wrote that "When we moved this past year, we
walked around the yard one last time and I saw a note on last year's tree from
my daughter, which asked the new owner not to cut it down, and if they didn't
want it, to call her."
Kelley Anne Carney's family (Sandy Hook) has a tradition that started with
Kelley Anne's great-grandfather. They plant a seedling during their first
spring in a new home. Last year, the seedling they planted was the one that
first grader Kelley Anne received through her school.
Adam and Michael Stordy (first and fourth graders at Sandy Hook School)
planted their trees in loving memory of their two dogs. As the trees grow,
they think of Klyde and Shana.
Also this week, many children will be given butterfly larvae to set free once
they emerge from their cocoons.
