Council Gives The Police Some Traction

The Newtown Police may get their four-wheel-drive vehicle, after all.
The department had requested that an all-terrain vehicle be purchased by the
town, but the Board of Selectmen last month voted against the request, saying
the town already has plenty of all-terrain vehicles available to the police.
Tuesday night, however, the Legislative Council, upon recommendation of its
public safety subcommittee, voted to add $8,396 to provide funds to purchase a
supervisor's/accident investigation vehicle in place of one patrol car.
The police commission had originally requested four new patrol cars and the
four-wheel-drive truck, but settled for three new cars and the truck. The
change increased the patrol car line item from $74,220 to $82,616.
Police Chief James Lysaght said the vehicle is needed for a town this size
during snow storms and to reach areas that can not be accessed by roads. He
said it would also be used by the department's soon-to-be-formed accident
investigation team.
First Selectman Bob Cascella is opposed to buying the vehicle and urged the
full council to keep it out of the budget.
"I disagree with the concept because we put together a vehicle-replacement
plan, which is great. Now, we're abandoning the vehicle-replacement plan to
have a toy," he said.
The council approved the police department's total budget of $2,261,921.
The Newtown Fire Department had requested that its capital budget be increased
from $115,000 to $159,000 to provide funds for the $44,000 roof replacement at
the Hook & Ladder firehouse, but the council voted against the request, 7-3,
despite the recommendation of the public safety subcommittee.
Democrats Jack Rosenthal, Melissa Pilchard and Lisa Schwartz voted in favor of
funding the roof repairs, while Republicans Pierre Rochman, Joe McGowan, Joe
Borst, Karen Blawie, Win Ballard, Bill Brimmer and John Kortze voted against
them.
The total fire department budget of $610,400 was approved.
The public safety subcommittee includes Jack Rosenthal, chairman, Win Ballard
and John Kortze.
