SIDEBAR FOR 911 STORY: TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL
It is important for children to learn how to call for help in a medical
emergency. Here are some tips for parents that were published in Make The
Right Call by Emergency Medical Services.
Explain that 911 emergency medical services should be called only in an
emergency.
A medical emergency is when someone faints or collapses, has trouble
breathing, gets very sick, or is badly hurt. In other words, a medical
emergency is when you think someone's life is in danger or the situation is
very serious. If you don't know for sure, call EMS (911) just to be safe.
Dial 911 to get help quickly.
Post the 911 number on or near the phone. List your home address and phone
number, too. In an emergency, even the most familiar information is sometimes
hard to remember. Show your children and their visiting friends where this
information can be found.
Teach your children how to make an emergency call from a pay phone in case of
an emergency when they are away from home (on vacation, at the playground,
etc). There is no charge for a 911 call from a pay phone (or cellular phone).
