Spend Monday Walking And Weeding In The Great Outdoors At Two Audubon Events

Southbury — In celebration of the 35th anniversary of Earth Day, local nature lovers and bird enthusiasts are invited to take part in two upcoming events at the Bent of the River Audubon Center. Both events take place on Monday, April 25.

An Adult Nature Walk is scheduled to begin at 8 am Monday and will last approximately two hours. The leisurely hike will be guided by one of Audubon’s naturalists, and participants will likely see a number of species of waterfowl and migrant birds. Bring binoculars because this is the best time to see warblers and other migrants perched high in the tree branches where the new growth of spring is still not fully out. Nature walkers should meet at the kiosk by the entrance parking lot. Fee is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers.

An Invasive Plant Work Day, also taking place Monday at the Bent of the River Audubon Center, has been scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Participants are invited to join a crew of hardy volunteers and help eliminate nonnative, invasive plants that damage the ecosystem and degrade wildlife habitats.

“This is hard work but great exercise and lots of fun!” according to Audubon office manager Donna Rose Smith. Hand tools will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring heavy-duty gloves.

Again, participants are asked to meet at the entrance parking lot kiosk.

The Audubon Center at Bent of the River is at 185 East Flat Hill Road. Take Exit 14 off I-84 and turn left onto Route 172 north. Go through the light into South Britain and watch for East Flat Swamp Road on the left (after the Country Store and before the Congregational Church). The Audubon Center entrance and parking area is a short distance on the left. Trails are open to public seven days a week during daylight hours. Office hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Call: 203-264-5098. No fees unless otherwise noted.
