TOWN & COUNTRY GARDENERS RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The Town and Country Club of Newtown was honored recently with an award from
the national governing board for federated garden clubs.
The club received the Purple Rosette Award, the highest award given by the
National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc, to a club in their category, at
the Appreciation and Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, October 15. The award was
presented to Ena Higgins, chairman of the Newtown club's flower show, by Dee
Mozzochi, president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc.
The award had been presented to Ms Mozzochi at the national convention at
Hilton Head last spring.
The award was given to the Newtown Club for the flower show "A New England
Odyssey," which was conceived as a picture of New England. It was staged in
the undercroft of Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown in June 1996.
"New England Odyssey" featured five divisions in the design category, two
outstanding educational exhibits, three large tables of horticulture,
refreshments with a New England theme, and a seating area with the national
poster for membership along with membership applications.
The club also received citations for civic development and conservation at the
meeting.
