Schools Will Close For Presidents' Day

Newtown High School students will have classes scheduled for at least five

extra days at the end of the year, but students will not be expected to attend

school on Presidents' Day, Monday, February 16.

In a recent meeting of the Board of Education, John Reed, Superintendent of

Schools, explained that there would be significant costs involved in opening

the school on a holiday because custodians, secretaries and other support

staff would need to be paid double their regular pay for working on a holiday.

Newtown High School students have missed five days already, three because of a

delayed opening due to construction in September, and two because of snow

days.

The question of opening on Presidents' Day arose because according to the

school calendar, if there are five or more snow days by the end of January

classes would be scheduled for Presidents' Day.
