Weekend Morning Hike At Hetzel Refuge

MIDDLEBURY — On Sunday, November 4, the last in the winter series of monthly hikes sponsored by Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust will take place at the Hetzel Refuge in Middlebury.

The Hetzel Refuge is a largely undiscovered 98-acre jewel of trails that meander through woods, an old Christmas tree grove, by several ponds and a lake. The hike will be lead by Anne Hetzel Nalwalk, a member of Flanders’ board of directors and the daughter of Dr Hetzel, who had a love of the out-of-doors and was largely responsible for developing the lovely refuge.

Participants will understand Ms Nalwalk’s love for and knowledge of the property as she weaves her stories around her own considerable skills as a conservationist and naturalist.

Participants will meet at 9:30 am at the Hetzel Refuge in Middlebury. To reach the refuge, follow Route 64 from Woodbury and turn left onto North Street (at Middlebury Garage); cross Charcoal Avenue, to Artillery Road; continue up the hill on Artillery Road, and at the stop sign turn left onto Breaknect Hill Road. Entrance to Hetzel Refuge is 0.3 mile on the right (look for a red mailbox with #506 on it.

Questions regarding the specific nature of the hikes or concerns about weather can be addressed by calling Flanders’ office at 203-263-3711.
