Adults, Teens, And

Substance Abuse

To the Editor:

As we are in the season of proms, graduations, and summer parties, I am worried about the dangers of underage drinking. In light of recent events, I am very concerned about the attitude of teen substance use. I am particularly concerned about adults who condone teen substance abuse.

What is the thinking (if any) behind the notion that taking the keys and allowing kids to use substances at a private home equates with being a responsible adult? I cannot understand how some parents and other influential adults allow minors to consume alcohol and/or other drugs at their homes. Even the current Underage Drinking Ordinance, which levies fines against homeowners, is not enough of a deterrent for these grossly irresponsible individuals. Frankly, the penalties in this ordinance should be revised to reflect the consequences of underage drinking.

On a developmental level, I understand that the kids who attend these parties lack the maturity to make responsible decisions. What frightens, confuses, and angers me are the parents and other influential adults who have the benefit of life experience and mature brain development and choose to put kids in an unhealthy life threatening situation. In the very least when a parent decides to break the law for their child they are undermining their own parental authority.

Sadly, it often takes a tragedy for some teens to truly recognize the dangers of drinking and drugging. Unfortunately, it appears it will take the same tragedies before certain adults realize the mistakes of their poor parenting skills and/or role modeling.
