St Rose Students To Attend

Connecticut Invention Convention

The 22nd annual Connecticut Invention Convention will highlight the clever creations of some area students. The event is hosted by the University of Connecticut School of Engineering and will take place on Saturday, April 30, in Gampel Pavilion at UConn in Storrs.

Representing the Newtown area is St Rose fifth grader Elyse Bokuniewicz. The students were selected by their representative schools to join approximately 650 young inventors in grades K–8 from across the state.

At the convention, the inventors are placed in groups of approximately ten, and each invention is evaluated by the group and two judges. More than 120 judges, including engineers, scientists, educators, attorneys, entrepreneurs, marketing, and other professionals will take part. Three students are selected from each group to receive recognition, including a savings bond and Timex watch. Special awards are also made by organizations such as the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association and the US Postal Service.

After last year’s event, the Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) was contacted by NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, which led to an August appearance by three Marlborough students. Inventor Levi French of Marlborough went on the show to promote his prototype of an illuminated toilet seat. The show is looking for more talented young inventors this year.

Although the CIC is a serious educational program, CIC President Charlie Baumgartner of Plainville-based GE Consumer and Industrial was ecstatic with the attention from the entertainment show. Participation is up this year, due to the recent attention.

CIC is a nonprofit organization that provides a curriculum for teaching inventing to children in grades K–8, in the hope that many of the students will eventually pursue careers in science and engineering. Approximately 10,000 students go through the program annually in 90 schools across the state.

The convention is open to the public. Visitors may view the inventions from noon to 1:30 pm. The UConn School of Engineering will also have various displays and conduct campus tours.
