Stoneware Post Sale
w/cuts
CLARENCE, N.Y. -- More than 300 pieces of blue decorated stoneware and related
accessories were offered at absentee auction on March 22 by Vicki and Bruce
Waasdorp.
The sale recorded a large number of strong absentee bids with only four lots
failing to sell, three of which received no bids at all.
The top lot of the sale was a Pottery Works three-gallon jar with brush
applied cobalt standing stag decoration. Condition on the piece was catalogued
as being very good with a rim chip and stone burst on the backside of the jar.
With a minimum bid of $3,500, the jar sold for $7,700, including the 10
percent buyer's premium.
A North Bay two-gallon crock marked by Waelde, decorated with a horse standing
at a hitching post, was in near mint condition and sold at $7,150. Also marked
by Waelde was a two gallon jug decorated with a bantam rooster, which realized
$5,280.
A two gallon cream pot marked by N. Clark, Rochester, was decorated with a
bold spotted bird on a branch. Also listed as being in excellent condition,
the rare ovoid form piece sold for $5,390.
A four gallon jar marked by J&E Norton, Bennington, decorated with crossed
double peacocks in a tree, did well at $4,950, while a four gallon churn from
the Whites Utica pottery, decorated with a foliate heart and dated 1863, sold
at $4,510.
What was perhaps the most important piece of stoneware in the sale, a five
gallon double sided water cooler decorated with a large spotted fish on one
side and a huge flower on the other, carried a $4,000 minimum bid and failed
to meet reserves.
Prices reflect the 10 percent buyer's premium. For further information,
