Falling Wall Injures Construction Workers

GENNEWS
Workmen assembling the framing for a house under construction on The Boulevard
were injured late Tuesday morning when an end wall of the building fell down,
striking them.
Firefighters said that four workers were hurt in the incident, two of them
seriously and two receiving relatively minor injuries. The injured workers
were transported to Danbury Hospital by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The identities of the injured workers were not disclosed by the company doing
work on the site, McLoy Development, LLC, of Newtown.
The house under construction is on a steep rise on the east side of The
Boulevard, near its intersection with Hanover Road.
Newtown Hook and Ladder Volunteer Fire Company Chief David Ober said the end
wall on the north side of the house fell back onto the two workmen who were
most seriously injured. The wall fell onto framing for the floor of the second
story of the house.
Emergency service workers pulled so-called "Stokes baskets" up to the accident
site and placed the injured men in the baskets before bringing them down to
waiting ambulances. The baskets were used as precaution in the event the men
had neck and back injuries.
Firefighter Bill McAllister said, "It was a freak accident."
On arriving at the scene, McAllister, firefighter Mike McCarthy, and Chris
Sadlier of the ambulance corps went to aid the injured men, McAllister said.
Construction workers who had been in the Sandy Hook Deli and heard the
emergency radio call for help went to the scene to lend their assistance,
McAllister said.
