Managers Select A Roofer For Edmond Town Hall
GENNEWS
Edmond Town Hall will be getting a new roof - at least, part of it will.
The Board of Managers opened bids on Monday from four roofing firms and
awarded a contract to Commercial Roofing and Contracting, Inc, of Putnam,
based on its low-bid of $122,400, which was about $25,000 less than the next
lowest bidder.
The base bid covers the re-roofing of four flat sections of roof on the back
side of the building. Adding the consulting fees and other related costs will
bring the project to between $150,000 and $175,000, close to the projected
cost of the project, according to Edgar Beers, chairman of the Board of
Managers.
H.B. Fishman and Company, Inc, of South Windsor will act as the clerk of the
works for the project.
The base bid does not include a new slate roof for the front of the building.
Instead, this roof was bid as two additional alternates.
Replacing the gutters, flashing and valleys on the slate roof was bid at
$18,400. The second alternate, re-roofing the entire slate roof (including the
gutters, flashings and valleys), was bid at $101,000.
"We have to sit down with the contractor and talk about the project," Mr Beers
said. "We may still do parts of the slate roof. There are a few little leaks
which can be attended to. But the entire roof does need to be replaced. It was
put on when the building was constructed in 1929. The slate roof at Hawley
School, which was built before Edmond Town Hall, was replaced at least 15 to
20 years ago when I was on the [Legislative] council."
The Board of Managers had asked the town to contribute $50,000 toward the cost
of a new town hall roof in the 1997-98 budget but the Legislative Council's
Administration Committee pared that request down to $25,000. Although the
building was built as a town hall by town benefactress Mary Hawley, the town
traditionally hasn't paid for maintenance to the building. Nearly all costs
have been paid by the Hawley Trust Fund and receipts from movie ticket sales
and rentals of the gym, Alexandria Room and other rooms in the building.
