Plants With A Past For Sale

BETHLEHEM — The Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden will be having a one day plant sale on Saturday, May 26, from 9 am to 4 pm. Annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees will be available as will “plants with a past” — perennials and shrubs propagated from the plants found in the historic 1915 formal Ferriday Garden.

At 1 pm, the well-known garden author and Litchfield County resident Tovah Martin will lead a garden walk of the property. Guided walks of the perimeter landscape will be given through the day by the trained interpretive staff. There will be no charge for those wishing to go on the walks if they have purchased plants, otherwise the regular $3 per person garden tour fee will apply.

The Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden, located at the intersection of Routes 61 and 132 in the center of Bethlehem, is the 18th Century home of the noted Colonial theologian the Reverend Joseph Bellamy. Purchased by the Ferriday family in 1912, the property was transformed into a summer estate complete with circa 1915 formal parterre garden and an apple orchard.

Over time, the Ferridays added to the horticulture collection which features lilacs peonies and old roses as well as unusual flowering and fragrant trees and shrubs.

The Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden is regularly open  Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children. For more information concerning The Bellamy-Ferriday plant sale, call 203/266-7596.
