SFMOMA Publishes Catalogue
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has
published a catalogue of the works of Paul Klee (1879-1940) from the Djerassi
Collection.
The 75-page publication presents over 115 Klee works, including 20 color
plates with extended captions, and offers the first comprehensive view of the
collection. Paul Klee: The Djerassi Collection at the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art features an essay by Janet Bishop, SFMOMA Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation associate curator of painting and sculpture, and a preface by Dr
Carl Djerassi.
The collection, at SFMOMA, stands as one of the largest private holdings of
Klee works in the world. Through a generous promised gift, the bulk of it will
one day be part of the museum's permanent collection.
Dr Djerassi, a chemist and inventor of the birth-control pill, has been
collecting the work of Paul Klee for more than 30 years.
"I was fascinated by [Klee's] versatility, the range of media he chose, and
his deep intellectuality," he said. "In his oeuvre of over 9,000 works, he
used every conceivable surface, from various papers and canvas to glass,
burlap, gypsum and even ceramic."
The catalogue is available at the museum store for $14.95.
