Pool Table & Piano At Phillips

NEW YORK CITY -- The contents of a New Jersey Victorian mansion were auctioned

by Phillips International Auctioneers on March 10, following a four-day

exhibition. The 172 lots offered, with 115 bidders in competition, resulted in

a gross of $419,275.

Headlining the auction was a Brunswick Aesthetic Movement marquetry inlaid

pool table, going to an interior decorator at $22,000. The price tied with a

mahogany Steinway parlor grand piano, model #101329, which sold to the trade.

A pair of American Empire gilt and stencil decorated card tables made in New

York, circa 1830 (est $6/8,000), garnered $12,500; an eight-light crystal and

gilt metal chandelier, six feet high, sold at $20,000 against an estimate of

$10/15,000; and a pair of Biedermeier flame birch book cabinets, each with

mullioned double doors, standing on paw feet, reached $10,000.

A Victorian Aesthetic Movement sofa table (est $5/7,000) ornately wrought of

papier-mache, which was inlaid with mother-of-pearl and painted black with

gilt decoration and floral sprays, reached $8,000; and a massive pair of late

Nineteenth Century Chinese export "Mandarin Canton" porcelain palace urns,

standing 26 inches high, each having a lid (est $4/6,000) fetched $11,000.

Aubusson tapestry cushions (est $5/700) brought $1,300 for two of average

size, while a pair of 21 by 21 inch cushions (est $1/1,500) reached $1,700; a

pair of blanc de chine table lamps made from a pair of porcelain urns,

possibly Meissen, sold at $2,500; and an Aubusson rug with dimensions of 21'4"

by 16'10", having been cut, nonetheless went out at $14,000.

Regency chinoiserie decorated marble-top columns (est $3/5,000) were purchased

at $4,000, and a giltwood confidante reached $4,250.
