Newtown Students Win State Level Science Fair

Over the weekend of March 17 and 18, a number of Newtown students were named as finalists in the 65th Annual Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair, including a group from Newtown Middle School and groups from St Rose of Lima.

The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair was held at Quinnipiac University.

Newtown Middle School eighth grade students Lydia Field and Caitlin Moss were named as finalists and won the Dominon’s Millstone Power Station Physical Science award for their project, “The Effect of Soil Type on Earthquake Damage.”

St Rose of Lima seventh students Lauren Cirone and Anna Brubaker were named as finalists and won the Pfizer Life Science Award for a middle school team, a CSF Medallion and Acrylic Award, and the Alexion Biotechnology Awards, including $100 and a trophy, for their project, “Testing the Effect of ph Levels of Polluted Fresh Water on Elodea Canadensis Lifespan.”

St Rose of Lima seventh grade student Grace Herrick took home multiple awards for her project, “The Investigation of the Presence of Caffeine in Groundwater and Sewage.” The awards included Dominion’s Millstone Power Station Physical Sciences awards, including first place in the physical sciences seventh grade division, $200, and more; Audubon Connecticut & Arch Chemicals Environmental Awards, including second place for the middle school division, $200, a trophy, and Audubon gifts; a certificate and a $50 gift card from the Association of Women Geoscientists, and a gift card from the Office of Naval Research, US Navy/US Marine Corps.

St Rose of Lima eighth grade students Katerina Ringes and Marina Renzi earned $125 from the Connecticut Science Supervisors Association for their project, “The Effect of Electromagnetic Fields on Scenedesmus Algae Cells.”

The Connecticut Science Fair is a yearly statewide science and engineering fair in which more than 15,000 seventh grade through high school seniors participate from Connecticut and New York schools.

St Rose of Lima’s participation in the fair is coordinated by middle school science teacher Marde Dimon, and Newtown Middle School’s participation is coordinated by eighth grade science teacher BJ Liberty.
