To the Editor:

The recent budget and referendum process was sorely lacking leadership.

The budget was put forward after numerous levels of input, starting with each department, then reviewed by the Superintendent or the First Selectman, and finally reviewed by four separate elected boards. Once sent to referendum, leadership at the highest levels failed to support a budget clearly created in the best interest of Newtown. Rather than explain why the approval was benefiting Newtown, they campaigned against the budgets, encouraging voters to defeat the Budget and Referendums. Newtown was purposely divided, rather than united behind a common goal.

Leadership is the ability to influence and guide individuals or groups towards a common goal. It involves inspiring, motivating, and empowering others to achieve shared objectives. Leadership encompasses a range of skills and behaviors, including vision, communication, decision-making, and the ability to foster collaboration and growth.

Here’s a more detailed look at what leadership entails:

Key aspects of leadership:

Influence: Leaders have the ability to persuade and guide others to take action.

Vision: Leaders create a clear picture of the future and inspire others to work towards that vision.

Motivation: Leaders inspire and encourage individuals to strive for excellence and achieve their full potential.

Communication: Leaders effectively communicate their vision and strategies, ensuring that everyone understands the direction and purpose.

Decision-making: Leaders make informed decisions that guide the group toward its goals.

Collaboration: Leaders foster a collaborative environment where individuals can work together effectively.

The lack of Leadership and Vision jeopardized the Future quality and prosperity of Newtown. In the end the voters realized this and voted accordingly.
