Do you have any nicknames? Soph.

Family: My mom and dad, my older sister and brother-in-law, and their children/my niece and nephew. My dad’s side of the family is really big. They’re here in the United States and we visit with them a lot. I love doing holiday parties and traditions, and spending time with all of them. My mom is from Germany and she has a really big family there. I love going to visit them as well. I feel very fortunate — not a lot of people have big families.

How long have you lived in Newtown? My whole life.

Work: I am a full-time student. I also do a lot of volunteer work and sports, but I’m hoping for a summer job now that school’s going to be done and I won’t have sports. I do cross country in the fall and golf in the spring.

Are you a member of any clubs, organizations and/or communities of faith? I am a member of the NHS Hawks Honors Association. We do a lot of volunteering at school-based events, so when they need tours or at Parent-Teacher Night we’ll direct parents to teachers’ rooms, stuff like that. I love doing community work. I was also accepted into the National Honor Society, and World Language Honor Society.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time? A lot of it is reading and listening to music.

What is the most recent book you’ve read? We read Twelfth Night by Shakespeare for school, and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to? I listen to lots of different genres. I like pop, the more mainstream stuff. I also like rock music too, and I recently started listening to K-pop. I really like BTS. There’s also a French artist I really like too, Indila. We learned about her during a French class project. Her music is really great. There’s also Faouzia, who is Canadian-Moroccan and I love her voice. It’s beautiful.

Also, my grandmother introduced me to older music, and I really like Bobby Darrin and that type of music. That’s a lot, I know. I’m all over the place.

What was the most recent movie you saw in the theater? I saw Thunderbolts*. I’m a big Marvel fan. I love Star Wars as well, and Star Trek.

Favorite food? Mac and cheese, always has been and probably always will be.

What is your proudest accomplishment? I thought I wanted to be on the medical track when I got older, so I did the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance EMT class. My dad suggested it, so I did the class, and loved the class and the people there, but I realized medicine was not my favorite part. I wasn’t into the science of it, so I decided not to go to the medical path, but I was really proud of myself for trying that, and going on ambulance calls as a student.

I learned so much, not just about medical calls but also responsibility, and how to stay calm during stressful situations. I passed all the tests and got my certifications. It was something very new for me, and I was nervous on the first call, but I pushed through and was very proud to finish everything. It was really worth it, and Newtown is so lucky to have people like that.

What is your favorite thing about Newtown? I really love the community here. I love the community events we have, and the people here are really nice. I really feel fortunate living here.
