Babe Ruth Baseball Champs Crowned
Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball held its championships at the Glander Field Complex earlier in June and crowned three title winners for the different age brackets. Two of the games were decided in the final at bat.
Reds 13, Red Sox 7: In the 7/8 age division the Reds defeated the Red Sox 13-7. Jackson DiMeglio had a big night for the Reds with four hits, including an inside the park homerun. Liam Troester, Joey Bartolic, Lucas Nunes, Matthew Pellicone, and Ruscher Neugold all provided multiple hits for the Reds. On the defensive end, Gio Grates, James Ragusa, and Miles Partridge all had solid plays in the field. Owen Rudolph missed the game with an illness but was a top contributor all season long. The Red Sox were led by John Williams with two hits and two RBI. Owen Phillips added two hits and Jacob Morrell drove in two. Matthew Dovale pitched two innings, giving up just two runs and striking out six for the Sox.
White Sox 5, A's 4: In the 9/10 matchup, the White Sox prevailed in a tightly-contested game. After falling behind 2-0 the White Sox battled back behind great pitching performances by starter Joey Skura followed by relief work from Ollie Knauf, Santiego Puebla, and Brayden Andrews who threw two scoreless frames. The White Sox tied the game with Skura stealing home late in the contest. Alexander Romanino got on base and scored the winning run from second on a hit by Thomas Scinto for a walk-off victory. Pitching was the key for the A’s as Connor Plunkett, DJ Macaluso, and Jack Fregoe each pitched two solid innings.
Marlins 7, Cubs 6: The 11/12 championship game was a battle between two very strong teams from the beginning. The Marlins grabbed the lead by scoring a run in the first. The Cubs came storming back in the top of fourth inning with five runs. The Marlins did not buckle and tied the score in the bottom of the fourth. After the Cubs pulled ahead by one run in the top sixth inning, the Marlins were determined not to let the game slip away. Colin Scholz hit a game-tying home run over the fence in dramatic fashion. A few batters later, Dexter Upshaw laced a line drive into left center to bring the championship to the Marlins.
The Cubs had contributions across the board. Cole Boyajan pitched three strong innings and only allowed one run. Sean D’Amico, Aiden Oppel, Andrew Adams, Cam Veneziano, Luke Trefney, and Leo Fernandez all reached base and led the charge on offense. Kellan Kohlasch also contributed by pitching three tough innings to keep his team in the game. The Marlins were led by solid pitching from Owen Leighton, Mason Leonard, Kolby Conklin, and Cy Sterner. Chase Ibbitson had a huge pickoff that ended a rally in the fifth inning. Jaxson Velasco, Charlie Tortora, and Matthew Poidomani provided strong defensive support.
