On Wednesday, September 10, at 7 pm, The Genealogy Club of Newtown will hold its first meeting of the 2025-26 club year.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of every month September through June. The season opener will feature well known author and educator Thomas MacEntee presenting “Translating, Transcribing and Summarizing Documents using AI.”

Guests will learn how to harness the power of artificial intelligence to assist in transcribing, translating and summarizing a variety of genealogy records. Have a difficult-to-read handwritten baptismal record from the 1800’s? A faded newspaper obituary? No problem. MacEntee will cover the best AI platforms, as well as how to craft a solid prompt to get results.

MacEntee is a baby boomer with a love of punk rock music, but also art history who somehow “fell” into the technology industry about 40 years ago, and then left a lucrative IT career to pursue his love of family history and genealogy. His passion for genealogy began when he was 14 while he watched the mini-series “Roots” on ABC TV at the home of his great-grandparents.

Technology and historical research are opposites, but “tech people” like MacEntee are needed to guide today’s genealogists through the maze of options so they can deploy the best apps and devices to break down research brick walls.

One of MacEntee’s life principles is “knowledge should be shared, not hoarded.” He plans to stop presenting to genealogy societies and clubs after 2025, however, so the program for the local club will be among the final opportunities to hear him share his knowledge of AI.

Genealogy Club programs are co-sponsored by C.H. Booth Library. Anyone interested in family history and genealogy is welcome to attend and encouraged to become a member. Membership information will be available at the meeting.

Guests can join the Zoom presentation by emailing a request to genclubnewtownct.secretary@gmail.com by September 8. Include name, address, phone number and preferred email. A program link will be sent September 9 or 10.

Those planning to attend the September 10 meeting are asked to sign in around 6:45 so that all can be admitted before the meeting begins promptly at 7 pm.

Thomas MacEntee will present the season opening program for The Genealogy Club of Newtown.
