Collaboration Before Politics

To The Editor:

I am writing to share that I will be seeking re-election to Newtown’s Legislative Council as a petitioning candidate in District 3. Over a year ago, I made the decision to become an unaffiliated voter, stepping away from party affiliation, focusing on ideas and collaboration rather than political labels. For me, public service has always been about working with others, listening carefully, and doing what is best for Newtown.

During my two terms on the Legislative Council, I have consistently supported proposals based on their merit, not their origin. I believe thoughtful, independent decision-making best serves our community. I have worked to balance the need for strong schools and municipal services with respect for the tax burden our residents and businesses shoulder.

Local families and employers ultimately carry the responsibility for funding town services, and we must be mindful of that impact. At the same time, I have been a strong advocate for protecting Newtown’s open spaces while encouraging responsible economic development on properties already zoned for that purpose. I believe this approach protects the character of our town while bringing unused properties back onto the tax rolls to strengthen our economy.

Beyond my work on the Legislative Council, I have had the privilege of serving our community in many ways. I have been a Trustee of the C.H. Booth Library, a member of a Charter Revision Commission, a member of the Edmond Town Hall Board of Managers, and I have served on the Economic Development Commission.

I also volunteered with the Parks & Recreation Trails Committee and previously served as Race Director of the Newtown Turkey Trot before, during and after the pandemic. These experiences have given me a broad perspective on our town’s strengths and challenges, and they have deepened my commitment to serving as a collaborative, constructive voice for Newtown.

As a petitioning candidate, I do not appear on a party line, so I ask voters in November to look toward the bottom of the ballot to find my name. Campaigns are about conversations, and I welcome your support in the weeks ahead — whether that means putting out a yard sign, stopping to chat when I’m in your neighborhood, or simply sharing your ideas for Newtown.

I would be honored to earn your support for another term serving District 3 on the Legislative Council, and I look forward to continuing these conversations in the weeks ahead.

Tom Long
