Love And Betrayal Take Center Stage In ‘M. Butterfly,’ Next On Brookfield Stage
BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Theatre will present a production of the 2017 Broadway Revival version of M. Butterfly, directed by Lou Okell, weekends September 12 to October 4.
When M. Butterfly premiered in 1988, its remarkable story of international espionage and personal betrayal solidified its status as a modern classic. Based on the real-life affair between a French diplomat and a mysterious Chinese opera singer, David Henry Hwang’s Tony Award-winning work blurred the boundaries between male and female, East and West.
For the 2017 Broadway Revival, Hwang incorporated new material inspired by details of the relationship that had emerged since the play first seduced audiences. The intoxicating reimagining of M. Butterfly examines the nature of love and the devastating cost of deceit.
The Brookfield cast stars Miles Everett, Todd Santa Maria, Andres Idrovo Castillo, Tony Benedetti, Kristin Aug, Rachel Ames, Aranka Vitarius, Sandy Vallati, Rick Stewart, and Vincent Chistoni.
The production features fight and intimacy choreography by Pippa Walton, dance choreography by Nell Walton, and music coaching by Maggi Heilweil.
The show contains brief nudity and depiction of suicide and guns. It is not intended for young audiences.
Performances are planned for Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 2 pm.
Tickets are $25 regular, $20 for seniors or students, with all seats reserved. Reservations can be made at BrookfieldTheatre.org.
The theater is at 184 Whisconier Road (Route 25), adjacent to Brookfield Library.
