October Is Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month
To the Editor:
October is designated Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to shine a light on an issue that affects millions across the country. According to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16 million people are impacted by domestic violence each year. These numbers are staggering — and they highlight the urgent need for awareness, support, and community action.
This year, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) has designated September 27th as its International Day of Service in support of domestic violence prevention. As a proud member of GFWC, the Newtown Woman’s Club is participating with the launch of our “Paint Newtown Purple” campaign.
Purple represents national awareness and advocacy for domestic abuse.
We are asking our fellow residents to join us in a simple, yet powerful gesture: on Saturday, September 27th, place a purple bow or ribbon on your mailbox, front door, or window to remain for the month of October. This visible sign of solidarity helps start conversations, spread awareness, and show support for All survivors.
Let’s come together as a town to make a statement: domestic violence has no place in Newtown, nor anywhere else!
