Newtown High School’s girls soccer team went to Immaculate of Danbury and blanked the Mustangs 7-0 on October 3, then topped host Weston 3-1 on October 7.

In the win over Immaculate, Addie O’Leary and Olivia Fernandes both scored twice and Summer Chaljub, Lyla Kopp, and Makenzie Fregoe also hit the back of the net. Teagan Waaler logged two assists and Fregoe, Leah Morris, Sadie Singlak, and Delia Stango also had assists. The Nighthawks made it eight straight games without allowing a goal.

They visited Weston on October 7 and finally surrendered their goal for the first time since September 6 (a 2-1 win over Enfield), but prevailed to improve to 9-1-1 overall. Morris scored twice and Kopp netted a goal. O’Leary, Maddy Gioiele, and Stango had assists.

Morris opened the scoring early in the first half, following up O’Leary’s rocket of a shot that hit the crossbar. Weston equalized in the middle of the first half. Toward the end of the first half, Gioiele found Kopp wide on the left wing with a great pass from center back. Kopp had a great first touch that set her up with a foot race to goal, and she slotted home a nice breakaway tally for the lead.

The second half was a battle of possession. Newtown was finally able to put the game away with two and a half minutes left as Stango won the ball off the defender and was left undefended heading to goal. Stango found Morris with a square pass in the middle of the field, and Morris took a touch and delivered a perfectly-placed shot to finish the game off.

“Weston always presents a unique test, they are a well-coached, disciplined team,” Newtown Coach Adam Bourret said.

Newtown will host Woodland on Saturday at 11 am.

Teagan Waaler keeps possession of the ball.
Sadie Singlak assisted a goal in Newtown’s win over Immaculate.
