Newtown High School football player Travis Rekos was honored before the team’s November 26 game, a 34-13 win over Masuk of Monroe, with the Bob Zito Coach’s Award. This newly-established award is given to a student-athlete who embodies the NHS football program’s spirit, pride, grit, and character.

It recognizes someone who leads with integrity, competes with heart, and consistently upholds the values that define the team. The selection is made in part for sportsmanship, unwavering dedication, and a true team-first mentality on and off the field. Zito, a former NHS state champion football coach and athletic director at NHS, was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023.
