State Police Seeking Witnesses To Highway Collision
CT State Police are hoping anyone who witnessed a collision on I-84 West in Sandy Hook on February 11 will contact them.
Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps were dispatched, along with state police troopers, at 11:27 am Wednesday, February 11 to I-84 West between the Bancroft Road overpass and the Exit 11 off-ramp for a reported two-vehicle crash with injuries.
According to the state police report, a 2021 Honda Civic EX and a 2026 Volvo VNL 860 were traveling westbound on I-84 West, east of Exit 11, when “a same direction sideswipe type of collision occurred between the left rear side of [the Honda] and the right front side” of the tractor-trailer truck.
Rachel Tangard, 32, of Norwalk, who was operating the Honda, sustained suspected minor injuries. She was checked at the scene but did not require transport to a hospital.
Mamuka Pakhuridze, 49, of Brooklyn, N.Y., the truck driver, was uninjured.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Airbags in the Honda deployed, but the airbags in the truck did not.
The Honda sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene by Hilario’s Towing. The truck and the trailer sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.
Due to conflicting operator statements, lack of sufficient physical evidence, and no additional witnesses to confirm either operator’s statement, CSP was unable to determine the at fault operator. No enforcement action has been taken.
State Police would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash. Viable leads will be investigated, according to the CSP report.
Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Trooper Eason (#1068) at 203-267-2200.
