Championship season continues for New England’s largest town youth wrestling program as Newtown Youth Association’s Little Hammers (kindergarten, first, and second graders) competed at Kid States in Southington on February 15. This was the culmination of four months of practices and tournaments that started back in November. There were 22 Newtown wrestlers who competed in full eight-man brackets, battling it out with other teams across the state.

Newtown celebrated ten place finishers, including one state champion. Michael Laake was crowned Connecticut State Champion. Placing second were Liam Edwards, Declan Cavanaugh, and Eli Fox. William Stetson placed third and Natalie Leonard, Kamden Kling, Ben Greene, Everett Worster, and Gavin Silva placed fourth.

Newtown Youth Association President Kyle Ibbitson said: “This was the conclusion of four months of practices, over 30 hours of training that included practices, tournaments, and so many matches. Many of these athletes gave it their all and more including blood, sweat, and tears. Newtown Wrestling couldn’t be happier with our future to have such a strong group of upcoming wrestlers who are already looking forward to next year.”
