The South West United girls’ hockey team, which includes players from area schools including Newtown High, won the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship by defeating the Amity-Cheshire-North Haven team 2-1 in overtime at West Haven’s Bennett Rink on Saturday night. Newtown’s Karli Thompson assisted Hannah Newman’s OT-forcing goal with 27 seconds left in regulation and set up Peighton Salerno for the winning tally.

Goaltender Jen Velky, of Masuk High in Monroe, was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player. The team is led by Carly Bokina, who was named the SCC Coach of the Year. South West United has played seven overtime games, and the familiarity with tight games paid off in the title game.
