Senior League Holds Championship, All-Star Game, And Contests

NYA Sports & Fitness hosted Newtown Youth Basketball Association’s (NYBA) Senior League Championship Night on March 6. The evening featured the Championship game, All-Star matchup, and contests; awards were handed out to league standouts.

The main event was the boys’ Senior League Championship. Team Kelly, captained by Connor Kelly, faced off against Team Williams, captained by Cooper Williams. Team Kelly won 59-51. Team Kelly’s roster included Kyle Duncan, Michael Murphy, Mason Moody, Logan Chacon, Ryan Hochstetler, William Lokey, Brayden Kozek, and Jacob Kelly. Team Williams featured Matt Leone, Jonah Kaiser, Ducky Okane, Thomas McKendry, Krish Verma, Beckett Williams, and manager Cam Kullgren.

The boys’ All-Star Game was also played. Team Foss beat Team Selner 64-56. Team Foss members were Nate Pickard, Grady Marks, Justyn Gonzalez, Nick Pavia, Julian Moore, William Lokey, Mack Foss, CJ Manfredonia, and Cole Stockwell. Team Selner members were Noel McLeod, Jack Carta, Derek Schnee, Thomas Selner, Ryan Payne, Cooper Williams, Henry Payne, Mason Moody, Joe Belisari, Sebastian Los, and Liam Miller.

Boys and girls participated in a 3-point competition. Manfredonia beat Selner 15-14 in the final round to take the title.

Graduating senior player Stephen Singlak announced the league awards. Selner won the Most Valuable Player award. McLeod won the Defensive Player of the Year award.

NYBA Senior League has more than 160 students on 18 teams. The teams are led by student captains who apply for the role each year. High school students of all ages and skill levels can play. Parents can sign their kids up for the league in October and November at newtownhoops.com. The season runs from early December to early March.
