Track And Field Teams Set To Begin Season
Newtown High's girls' and boys' track and field teams are set to compete in meets and challenge the best the South-West Conference has to offer in running, throwing, and jumping events this spring.
Many of the participants are continuing the sport following successful indoor winter seasons. The girls are coming off a third-place conference finish behind first-place Weston and runner-up Pomperaug of Soutbury, and the boys are coming off a second-place finish behind only Bethel. Last spring, the Nighthawk girls were conference champions and again will look to be among the top teams.
The girls are led by captains Anna Parsons (jumps, hurdles), Nadia Andrew (mid-distance), Jamie Humphreys (throws, jumps), Violet Assante-LaBash (hurdles, jumps), Natalie delCampo (mid-distance), and Marcela Corral (hurdles, jumps).
On the boys' side, captains are Grady Marks (sprints), Justyn Gonzalez Gil (jumps, sprints), Reid Karnas (mid-distance), and Orion Lowery (long-distance).
Many teammates will be looked to for strong performances in various events as the Nighthawks strive to cut race times and improve on jumps and throws throughout the season. The campaign gets going with a home meet Tuesday, April 7 when Harding and Kolbe Cathedral (both of Bridgeport) and Immaculate of Danbury visit Blue & Gold Stadium at 4 pm. NHS also has a home meet Tuesday, April 28 when Joel Barlow of Redding, Notre Dame Prep of Fairfield, and Stratford visit at 4 pm. The SWC Championships are set for Tuesday, May 19, when the teams head to Bunnell of Stratford at 3 pm.
