To The Editor:

For a fourth grader in Newtown, CT, a dream can feel as distant as the mountain peaks of Northern Vermont. Yet, for one local student-athlete, a decade of relentless focus has culminated in a milestone very few achieve: acceptance into Burke Mountain Academy (BMA) as a freshman for the upcoming fall semester.

Victoria Darcy’s journey has been defined by a grueling climb. The transition from local Connecticut hills to the elite competitive landscape of Northern Vermont is a notorious shock to the system. In the Northern Vermont Council, racers don’t just battle each other; they battle legendary "East Coast ice" and variable conditions that demand technical perfection. To succeed, she had to adapt to a standard where precision is measured in hundredths of a second.

She didn't reach this peak alone. Her ascent was forged under a powerhouse of mentorship. Coaches Tom and Mikaela Silva provided the foundational teamwork and technical excellence necessary to bridge the gap to national competition. Crucially, she was pushed to her limits by legendary mentors Diann Roffe, an Olympic gold medalist, and veteran coach Terri DelliQuadri. Their elite-level guidance was the catalyst that prepared her to compete against the "best of the best" from skiing hubs like California, Utah, Colorado, New Hampshire, Montana and Alaska.

Securing a spot at BMA is a massive feat of selectivity. With an average class size of just 12 to 15 students, the academy is one of the most intimate and focused training environments in the world. By earning one of these few coveted seats, she joins an elite lineage that includes 37 Olympians and 154 national ski team alumni, most notably Mikaela Shiffrin and Nina O'Brien.

As she prepares to move to East Burke, her achievement serves as a powerful reminder to every young athlete in Newtown: high-level dreams require high-level grit. This fall, she isn’t just attending a new school; she is claiming a victory that has been a decade in the making.
