Tennis Teams Earn Wins

Newtown High School's tennis teams competed on the courts and earned wins, including the girls posting a 6-1 victory at Notre Dame Prep on May 1 and 7-0 win at Stratford on May 4 and the boys defeating host Pomperaug of Southbury 5-2 on April 29 and visiting Stratford 7-0 on May 4.

Singles winners against Notre Dame were No 2 Charlotte Grasso 6-1, 6-1; No 3 Maria Souza 8-5 in a pro set match; and No 4 Aviva Fung 6-2, 6-2; doubles winners were No 1 Elle Musen and Ella Romano 6-1, 6-0; No 2 Grace Newsom and Mallory McCall 6-0, 6-0; and No 3 Caleigh Ward and Rebecca Goldman 8-0.

In the win at Stratford, in singles play No 1 Emily Anderson won 6-1, 6-1; No 2 Grasso won 6-0, 6-1; No 3 Livia Mustachi prevailed 6-1, 6-4; and No 4 Ward came back to win 6-7, 7-1, 10-4 (tiebreaker). In doubles play, Musen and Romano won 6-1, 6-1; Newsom and Lilah Hage won 6-0, 6-0; and Rebecca Goldman and Charlotte Moering won 6-2, 6-2.

Newtown singles winners against Pomperaug were No 1 A.J. Singh and No 2 Frankie Cannizzo, both by 6-0 scores; No 3 Aarav Shetty 6-3, 6-4; and No 4 Brody Paulsen 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-2; and doubles winners were No 1 Ryan Hislop and Stephen Singlak 7-5, 6-1.

In the boys’ win over Stratford, NHS won every set by 6-0, 6-0 scores with the exception of one forfeit. Singles winners were Singh, Hislop, Cameron Linnetz, and Paulsen (forfeit win); doubles winners were Dan Tzakas and Singlak, Joe Mele and Gavin Rankin, and Ryan Gilman and Sean Conlin.
