Readers are reminded that flags should be lowered from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 25. The federal holiday honors the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who died while serving this country.

Unlike most other observances that call for flags to be lowered until sunset, Memorial Day’s etiquette calls for flags to be raised to full height at midday.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the observance began after the Civil War as Americans decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and other tributes.

American Legion Post 202 will hold its annual Memorial Day observance at The Liberty and Peace Monument, at the intersection of Main Street at Schoolhouse and Hanover roads, this afternoon. The observance will begin promptly at 5 pm with the playing of “Taps” by a Newtown High School Band student.

Limited parking will be available along Main Street. Additional parking is also available in front of and behind Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street (south of the monument).

Organizers this week announced the observance will move into the theater of Edmond Town Hall in the event of inclement weather.
