Softball Team Gets Redemption Against Lancers, Advances To Face New Milford
Newtown High School's softball team, the No. 5 seed, visited No. 4 Notre Dame Prep of Fairfield in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Sacred Heart University (SHU) on May 23 and won 5-1.
The Nighthawks got redemption after having lost a 3-2, eight-inning contest to the Lancers in the regular season. Now, the Hawks will look to avenge a 10-6 setback to New Milford when the Hawks take on the top-seeded Green Wave in the semifinals. NHS and New Milford will meet at SHU on Tuesday, May 26 beginning at 5 pm.
In the 5-1 win over Notre Dame, pitcher Addy Cordova scattered five hits, walked one, and stuck out seven batters. Cordova surrendered only a first-inning run which tied the game.
Newtown took a 2-1 lead in the third and added runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Cordova helped her own cause with two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Elena Burdo collected three hits, drove in a run, and scored a run. Lila Accousti had a hit and drove in two. Gabby Ansman doubled and had an RBI. Olivia Doersch worked two walks and scored twice, and Emma Clyne walked and scored once.
